People of all hues reacted with dismay at the news of the passing on of ANC stalwart Mavuyisa Claudine Fungheni who was a member of the executive council member of the Collins Chabane Local Municipality in the Vhembe District in Limpopo.

Fungheni of Malamulele Township who was a member of the provincial executive committee of the ANC Womens’ League in Limpopo passed on on July 3 at Malamulele Township after a short illness.

In a statement released by the spokesperson Christina Mohale, the ANC Womens’ league in Limpopo hailed her as a ‘gallant fighter, a champion for women empowerment and a protector of children’.

“She was vocal in issues of gender based violence that we have seen escalating in the country,” read the statement.

The ANC Vhembe region also eulogized the late leader.

“She was a member of the SACP Alpheus Malivha District Executive Committee from 2000 to 2005. Her commitment to serve the ANC saw her being elected into the provincial executive committee under the then chairperson Cassel Mathale,” said the ANC statement issued by spokesperson Tshifiwa Samuel Dali.

Vhembe District Executive mayor Dowelani Nenguda also sent words of condolences to the family.

Although Nenguda is set to visit the family tomorrow, he said the district has lost a mother figure.

“She led by example as the former speaker of the Vhembe District Municipality,” he said.

Collins Chabane mayor Moses Maluleke has also gone to the family to offer condolences.

The late Fungheni was one of the few councilors who served on the political management teams of two municipalities.

She was the chief whip of the Thulamela Local Municipality and later the speaker of the Vhembe District Municipality.

That was before her present position as a member of the executive council of the Collins Chabane municipality dealing with special programmes.

According to her son Emmanuel, she would be laid to rest on Thursday.
