A leading member of the Magona royal family Mutshutshu Nxumalo of the Gidjana royal family at Magona says he understands the importance of students playing chess early in their lives.


“I am a former chess player while at Mbilwi high school in my youth, and I know that chess helps kids to concentrate, to think and solve problems, “he said at Gidjana High school at Magona yesterday when he donated a park chess game set to Gidjana High school which he handed over to school principal John Mkhomazi in the presence of the school governing body and the school management team.
I had promised them around February and I felt it necessary to fulfill my promise, “he said.
He said he would also do same at SDW Nxumalo High School between Nghomunghomu and Mashobye.

Prince Nxumalo is the son of the late chief and former Gazankulu Chief Minister SDW Nxumalo who after the advent of democracy he became an MP in Cape Town in the ANC ticket.
Introducing the game, Nxumalo played with one of the teachers who knew the game and three crack learners from the school who are also in the top ten in the district and the circuit were invited by Mkhomazi and introduced to the game.

They are Vukheta Trust Ngobeni, Dzuneko Shiburi and Dyondzo Hlatshwayo.
At the same event, the traditional leader and the school governing body agreed to celebrate the school’s 50 years anniversary on January 26 next year.


Well-known cleric Dr HD Makhubele, of the Full Gospel Church at Lombard village in the vicinity who was amongst the first learners at the school pledged to assist with motivating the learners at the school so that when the school celebrates the 50 years anniversary, they will also be celebrating good results.
The chairperson of the school governing body Boyce Mathebula said he was pleased with the donation.

“I am also pleased with the fact that we shall be having an anniversary celebration, something that was in my mind but felt that we would have no money. I am also excited because hosi has said he will donate two cows for the event, “he said.
