Xitsonga music living legend excited after receiving a certificate for his contribution to tourism

Greater Giyani Local Municipality honours Xitsonga Living LegendMayor Thandi Zitha presented the veteran muso with a certificate and an amount of R10 000

Xitsonga traditional music living legend Hlengani William Makhubele, known as HW Makhubele, was on Friday awarded by the Greater Giyani Local Municipality for his role is tourism.Giving him a certificate and an amount of R10 000 to the musician who has been singing for 44 years, mayor Thandi Zitha said HW Makhubele has done a lot to make Giyani known both nationally and internationally through his music.

Speaking at Vahlavi Lodge in Giyani during the mayoral Tourism Banquet Gala dinner, Zitha said the municipality has decided “to give credit where credit is due and honour someone who had been doing a lot of good work for the municipality for years without being acknowledged.”

Councillor Cedric Baloyi who heads local economic development at the municipality flanked the mayor when she made the announcement and also said glowing praises for the veteran singer. During the presentation there was song and dance and Makhubele’s old songs such as Mhana Sbongile were played making the situation electric. There were also many cultural performances by various groups such Xigubu xa Ka Hlomela and Tlharihani from Thomo. In his response, Makhubele said he was not expecting it and thanked the municipality profusely. “You can expect an appreciation song by next year,” he said amidst applause
