Poultry farmers in the Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo were urged to consider opting for indigenous chickens, as it has “numerous benefits”.
This was said at the workshop held by the Vhembe District Municipality in conjunction with Thulamela Municipality and the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development.
Other stakeholders were the University of Venda, Vhembe Agricultural Forum and Vhembe Commodity Association.
Making a presentation at the seminar, one of the farmers Emmanuel Mudau advised farmers to opt for indigenous poultry farming saying it was “more viable.”
“These chickens require less capital for expenses, maintenance and health care, making them a cost effective choice,” he said.
He added that indigenous chickens had a lifespan of ten years, and that enabled them to provide a sustainable source of income and nutrition.
Councillor Advocate Anderson Mudunungu who represented Executive Mayor Freda Nkondo encouraged farmers to work with diligence.
“Agriculture remains the backbone of our rural economy here in Vhembe district as it sustains families, provide employment and promote sustainable agricultural development in our beloved district,” he said.
A competition was conducted where the winners received 100 chicks.
One of the elated winners was Nndwamato Tshimangadzo, who is from Tshilapfe in the Thulamela Local Municipality.
He said this was enough for him to kickstart his poultry farming venture.
This is an expansion to his business, having started with plant production.
