The community of Ribungwani in Limpopo Province is in deep mourning after losing one of its treasures, the iconic Mackson Mavunda of Xigubu xa ka Mahatlani fame. The legendary dancer died at Elim hospital on Thursday October 23 after a short illness. He was 76. His death came just days after he received a Gold Shield Award from the National Heritage Council that declared him a National Treasure. Since he formed the Mahatlane dance Group in 1980, he was a revelation since it received a positive reaction in the community. It was later incorporated into the Gazankulu Youth Movement, showcasing Xitsonga culture and its dance throughout the world. It took him to many parts of the country including abroad. In 1990, he and his band performed in France, something that is the highlight of his illustrious career. The man later formed the Caravan Traditional dance group which he led until his last breath. He was described as the beacon of Xitsonga dance, particularly Xigubu and Mchongolo. The man has won several awards, making him a legend. Mr Ndoweni Malala, a fellow cultural activist described his passing as a big loss. “He has just been honoured with a Living treasure shield on October 19 and died a few days thereafter,” he moured. He said they had been together in the African music Symphony Ensemble which is now called Music is a great Investment. They also later worked together as part of African Indigenous Instrument Preservation. “I will always remember him for his exceptional skills,” he said. . He will be buried at his home village of Ribungwani on Saturday.
